The main match round count is approximately 100 rifle, 100 pistol and 40+ shotgun rounds. There will be 10 stages. ALL FOUR GUNS WILL BE USED ON EVERY STAGE. These counts do not include side match ammo.

SHOOTING CATEGORY SELECTION
If you take a moment to scan the list of Categories on the Shooters Application, you may notice a few of the Categories that have historically been there are missing.  In accordance with SASS Guidelines, the Match Application now only lists those categories that are considered the “Base Categories” as defined in the most recent Shooters Handbook, SASS Handbook, Ver. 27.4, 2023.  Valid Categories outside of the “Base Categories” are considered “Recognized” or “Optional” Categories, although we sometimes refer to them as Un-Official Categories. 

At SASS Sanctioned Matches, those at the State level or above, Categories above the Base Categories may be “Offered”, but they are only to be Honored (i.e., given an award) if the number of participants for that category exceeds a minimum level.  The specific section of the latest SASS Handbook, Ver. 27.4, 2023, that refers to this is located on Page 9.

The information from the Category sections of the Handbook have been compiled into a Category Matrix chart that visually shows which categories are the BASE Categories, which categories are the Recognized “Optional” Categories, and which Categories are Not Allowed.  That can be viewed here… SASS “Offical” Category Matrix 

If you would like to register for a Recognized “Optional” Category that is not shown on the application, you may still do so.  Simply select one of the check boxes next to a blank space and then enter your desired category in the available space next to the box you checked.  If there are sufficient additional competitors that want to join you, we will be excited to Honor that Category with an award.  If there are not enough competitors, you will be given the opportunity to either switch to a different Category that has enough participants, or shoot your desired Category anyway, but it will not be honored with an award. 

For our match, we have set the threshold for “Optional” Categories such that for the Open Categories (Mens/Ladies) there must be a Minimum of 3 Competitors and for any of the Ladies Categories there must be a Minimum of 2 Competitors in order to be honored with an award. 

Please Note: This Minimum Requirement only applies to the “Optional” SASS Recognized Categories;  All SASS Base Categories will be honored with an award.

“Posse With” requests are limited to three names. This includes spouse and family members.

Please use ONE APPLICATION PER SHOOTER, however you are welcome send a combined payment for applications mailed together.

Side Matches 2024

TENTATIVE Side matches will consist of Speed Pistol, Speed Rifle, Speed Shotgun, Derringer, Pocket Pistol, Long Range Rifle (Big Bore and Match Rifles at 100 yards), and a three stage blast (pre-registration only). There will be one winner in each category for Men's, Ladies, and Junior Boy and Girl. Matches will be for the best time all day. Shooters can shoot until they drop, run out of ammo or time. All side matches end at 4:00 PM sharp. There are no sub categories for firearm type (except long range rifle), type of powder used or shooting category. All day speed side match is FREE!

TENTATIVE The 3 Stage Blast. This will be shot on side match day and consist of three stages shot in any order. There is a $10 registration fee for the 3 Stage Blast, all of which will be donated to the SASS Scholarship Fund.  Separate awards will be given for the top male, top female and top boy and girl Junior shooters in the Blast.   See the match schedule for additional information.

Brass Pick-up Policy

Thunder Valley Days does allow brass pick up. Pick up is permitted up to the point that the next shooter is ready to come to the line. This way, you should get most of your brass back and not hold the match up. (It seems you never find that last piece of brass anyway!)

Level One, Door Prize Sponsor, (unlimited number available).  Providing door prizes of any value will have you listed in the match handbook and on our web site. If you have a web site, your web link will remain on our web site until the 2024 match is posted.  All sponsor listings will remain indefinitely on the archived scores.

Level Two, Side Match (Qty 6) and 3-Stage Blast (Qty 3) Sponsor, (9 Sponsorships available).  At this level, the sponsor supplies $75.00 in cash, merchandise, or gift certificates**. Your name will be listed as a Side Match Sponsor in the handbook, your name or business name will be posted at the side match that you sponsor and you will receive a handbook and Sponsor’s badge.  If you have a web site, your web link will remain on our web site until the 2024 match is posted. All sponsor listings will remain indefinitely on the archived scores. 

Level Three, Stage Sponsor, (10 Sponsorships available).   As a Stage Sponsor, you or your company supplies a minimum of $150.00 in cash, merchandise or gift certificates**.  Your name or business will be listed as a Stage Sponsor in the handbook, your name will be posted at the stage you sponsor and you will receive a handbook and Sponsor’s badge.  If you have a web site, your web link will remain on our web site until the 2024 match is posted. All sponsor listings will remain indefinitely on the archived scores. 

Level Four, Honorary Sponsor, (4 Sponsorships available).   As an Honorary Sponsor, you or your company supplies a minimum of $300.00 in cash, merchandise or gift certificates**.   Your name or business will be listed as an Honorary Sponsor in the handbook.  You will receive a handbook and a VIP Match Badge. If you have a web site, your web link will remain on our web site until the 2024 match is posted. You will also receive one complimentary match entry. All sponsor listings will remain indefinitely on the archived scores. 

Level Five, the highest level, is Match Sponsors, (2 Sponsorships available).   There are two Match Sponsorships available, one is the Single Action Shooting Society, SASS and again for 2023, Atlantic Guns has elected to be the other.  At the Match Sponsor level, the Sponsor provides $750.00 in cash, merchandise, or gift certificates**.  The Match Sponsors name is in the handbook and on this web site. They receive a handbook and VIP Match Badges, as well as two complimentary match entries.  Their web site link will remain on our web site until the 2024 match is posted. All sponsor listings will remain indefinitely on the archived scores.

*At all levels, we can place your companies catalog or flyer inside the shooters package.  VENDOR SPACES are available at no cost (refundable deposit may be required). Match dates are June 7, 8 & 9, 2024 (Friday, Saturday, Sunday).  Any items you wish to be included in the shooters packet must be received by May 20th, 2024.

**Gift Certificates must be redeemable at Thunder Valley Days, on line or over the phone.

ALL PRIZES SHOULD BE DELIVERED BY MAY 20th, 2024

Sponsorship commitment must be established, via sponsorship application,

Vendor Information 2024

In the past, we have not charged for vendor spaces. However, this policy has caused a problem from some vendors. It seems when there is nothing at risk, there is no incentive to complete the obligation made to set up as a vendor. Our space is limited and only a certain number of vendors can get in. When a vendor fails to show up, they prevented another vendor from getting in and our shooters suffer the consequences. At a previous TVD championship, 3 vendors failed to show up or call with cancellations. These vendors will not be allowed to participate in the future.   Download Adobe Acrobat Reader - Free.

Conventioneer Entry 2024

Conventioneers will be able to participate in unlimited shooting on Side Match Day, Friday, June 7, 2024. They will also get a personalized shooters badge, if they are registered  before June 1st. See the Thunder Valley Days 2024 Application for additional information. Conventioneers can participate in all Thunder Valleys Days events except the 10 main match shooting stages. Entry fee includes a free Saturday Banquet ticket. Conventioneers must also be SASS members and be dressed in period clothing. Use the same application as the main match shooters use, just select Conventioneer.

Visitor Information

Visitors to Thunder Valley Days, or any of the Cowboy Shoots, are certainly welcome. There is no charge for visitors. ALL VISITORS MUST HAVE HEARING AND EYE PROTECTION OR THEY WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO ENTER THE RANGES. NO VISITOR PETS ARE PERMITTED IN THE RANGE AREAS, YOUR COOPERATION IS APPRECIATED.

Target swap on Saturday the 8th at approximately 3:30 PM for about 3 hours. Contact Dogmeat Dad

Additional Rules 2024

We have several additional rules on our range. We have a minimum 650 fps rule on rifle and pistol ammunition. We do not permit hip shooting and we have a shot size of 7 1/2 or smaller. Violations will incur a 10 second minor safety penalty.

From Gaithersburg, Rockville, Bethesda and Northern Virginia Via I-270:
Take I-270 North to Father Hurley Blvd. (Rt 27), East toward Damascus. Continue through Damascus but do not follow Rt. 27 North when it gets in town, just continue straight (bear right at the Chevron Station). Once you pass the next light, you are actually on Rt.108 East. Take Rt. 108 2 miles and turn left on Mullinix Mill Rd. Take Mullinix Mill Rd. 1 1/2 miles and turn left into the driveway.

Take Rt. 355 North toward Frederick. Just north of Gaithersburg, near Milestone shopping center, take Rt. 27 Right toward Damascus. Take Route 124 North toward Damascus. At the light in Damascus turn Right (East) onto Rt. 108. Take Rt. 108 about 2 miles to Mullinix Mill Rd. Turn left on Mullinix Mill Rd. Go 1 1/2 miles and turn left into the driveway.

From Frederick Md., West Virginia, & Western PA. Via I-70:
Take I-70 East toward Baltimore. Take Rt. 27 South toward Damascus (also the Mt. Airy exit). Go South on Rt. 27 for 5.6 miles. In Damascus, at the light past the firehouse, turn left at the light onto Rt. 108 East. Go about 2 miles and turn left onto Mullinix Mill Rd. Go another 1 1/2 miles and turn left onto the driveway. Caution, Rt 27 has several speed cameras.

From Baltimore, Odenton, Howard County Via I-70:
Take I-70 West toward Frederick. Take Rt. 27 South toward Damascus (also the Mt. Airy exit). Go South on Rt. 27 for 5.6 miles. In Damascus, at the light past the firehouse, turn left onto Rt. 108 East. Go 2 miles and turn left onto Mullinix Mill Rd. Take Mullinix Mill Rd. about 1 1/2 miles and turn left onto the driveway. Caution, Rt 27 has several speed cameras.

OR
Take I-70 West to Exit 73, Woodbine Road, Rt. 94. Go south (left) on Rt. 94 to Rt. 108, Damascus Road. Take a right on Rt. 108. Go 1.6 miles and turn right onto Mullinix Mill Road. Go 1.5 miles and turn left into the driveway.

From Prince Georges County & Northern Virginia Via I-495:
Take I-495 to I-270 North towards Gaithersburg and Frederick. Next take Father Hurley Blvd. to Md. Rt. 27 North/East toward Damascus. Continue through Damascus but do not follow Rt. 27 North when it gets in town, just continue straight (bear right at the Chevron Station). Once you pass the next light, you are actually on Rt.108 East. Take Rt. 108  2 miles and turn left on Mullinix Mill Rd. Take Mullinix Mill Rd. 1 1/2 miles and turn left into the driveway.

From Prince Georges County, Scenic Route:
Take New Hampshire Ave. (Route 650) West toward Ashton & Olney. Continue on Rt. 650, cross over Rt. 108 and stay on Rt. 650. (If you turn left onto Rt. 108, follow the directions from Silver Spring). Eventually, (a long scenic ride), Rt. 650 ends and turns into Rt. 108 in a small town call Etchinson (blink and it's gone). Make a right on Mullinix Mill Rd., (first right after Long Corner Rd.). Go 1 1/2 miles and turn left onto the driveway.

From Wheaton, Silver Spring & Olney:
Take Georgia Ave. (Rt. 97) North toward Olney. At Rt. 108, in Olney, turn left (West) toward Laytonsville. Continue on Rt. 108 through Laytonsville until you get to the stop sign in Etchinson. Here you turn left to continue on Rt. 108 West. (Turning right would be New Hampshire Ave. aka Rt. 650). Continue on Rt. 108 toward Damascus and make a Right turn onto Mullinix Mill Rd. Go 1 1/2 miles and turn Left onto the driveway.
